‘Tis the Season

Related imageIf you have never heard of John Fugelsang or listened to his daily Sirius XM  program “Tell Me Everything,” you should check him out (Insight Channel 121/noon-2:00 pm).  He is to modern culture what Leonardo di Vinci was to the Renaissance.  He is a walking Google search engine.  He converses with guests about current events such as health care and immigration one minute and then shifts to the societal value of fart jokes the next.  Parade Magazine labeled his broadcasts, “NPR with a demented sense of humor.”

My personal attraction comes not from Fugelsang’s knowledge, but from his curiosity about what he does not yet know.  It is reflected in the show’s title, “Tell Me Everything.”  It comes from a Bob Dylan interview John read in his youth.

Someone asked Bob Dylan, ‘What’s your advice to a woman on a date with you?’ and Dylan said, ‘Tell me everything.’  As a young man, that was the sexiest, most romantic thing I’d ever heard—that curiosity and that desire to hear. I wanted to create an atmosphere where my listeners who call in and my guests would feel free to over-share.

Yesterday was no exception.  The last segment of each episode is often a roundtable discussion with all the day’s guests.  He calls it, “The ADHD Hour.”  Friday was the final broadcast before a two-week holiday break, and as one would expect, Fugelsang asked his guests about their holiday traditions including Latina comedian Jenny Saldaña who shared the fact she and her family first arrived in the U.S. from Guatemala on Christmas eve.  Thus, the holidays have an even more special meaning.  So much for holiday traditions.  Fugelsang reacted as though he had been struck by a bolt of lightning and immediately pivoted to the morning news about the seven-year-old Guatemalan girl who had died while in the custody of the U.S. Border Patrol.

His rant is too long to share in full, but here is the gist.  Sitting in church on Christmas eve does not make you a Christian.  Do not tell me you are celebrating the birth of the “baby Jesus” (his words) if you support a man who takes children away from their mothers, is doing everything he can to deprive 20 million Americans of their health insurance, pays hush money to porn stars and playmates, calls Nazis and white supremacists “good people” and gives cover to a dictator who tortures and dismembers a journalist.

On more than one occasion, I have shared my discomfort being constantly exposed to the now two-month celebration of Christmas.  But Fugelsang’s tirade made me think twice about an experience I had two days earlier.  I was in line to check out at the local Harris-Teeter with a full cart of groceries.  A women behind me had a basket with what appeared to be three items.  For some reason, our Harris-Teeter does not have an express lane; so I offered to let the woman go first.  After checking out, she turned to me and said, “Thank you and Merry Christmas.”  My first reaction, which my wife has rightfully reminded to keep to myself, was, “Damn it, it’s only December 12.  And Christmas has nothing to do with my actions.  Doesn’t she realize agnostics can be kind also?”

When I started to check out, the cashier said, “That was very nice of you.”  My reply.  “I only did what I hoped someone would do for me.”  Wait a minute.  Wasn’t that the “golden rule,” do unto others as you would have them do unto you?  Had I not done the Christian thing even though my exposure  to the golden rule comes from the story of Rabbi Akiba ben Yosef who was challenged to explain the Torah while standing on one foot?  [Historical Footnote: Like Jesus, Rabbi Akiba was executed by the Romans following the Bar Kokhba revolt in 136 A.D.  At least the Romans were equal opportunity executioners.]

Which brings me back to John Fugelsang.  In the age of Trump, perhaps the saddest commentary is the fact America is populated with a surprisingly large percentage of people who claim to be Christians but whose value system is contrary to the teachings of the man they consider to be their savior.  Now, I don’t know for sure the woman in line at Harris-Teeter voted for and still supports Trump.  But if she does, would not the appropriate response to her offer of season’s greetings be, “How dare you?”  But I would still have kept it myself.  Because Jesus reminded us all, even agnostics, “to turn the other cheek.”

The Putin Principle

…a concept in geopolitics and espionage where foreign assets in a conspiracy tend to rise to their level of incompetence or point of no future usefulness.

~From The Putin Principle by Vladmir Vladimirovich Putin

Related imageToday, alleged Russian spy Maria Butina is scheduled to plead guilty in federal court to being an unregistered foreign agent and is likely to receive a sentence of time served (five months since her arrest in July) and deportation back to Russia.  The quid pro quo?  Butina has been providing information to Justice Department investigators including the identity of Americans she used to infiltrate organizations such as the National Rifle Association as a means of promoting Russian interests.

If there was any doubt Butina is a real-life version of Keri Russell’s character in The Americans, consider the following excerpt from Malcolm Nance’s book The Plot to Destroy Democracy.

According to Time magazine, when (Russian banker and Putin confidante Alexander) Torshin recruited the lovely young woman she was a furniture salesperson in Siberia but moved to Moscow in 2011 to set up a pro-gun-rights group called Right to Bear Arms. This was the same time Torshin was publishing a pamphlet called “Guns Don’t Kill. People Kill.”  Butina captured the hearts of American gun enthusiasts in provocative photos. In them she presented sultry photos of herself with Saiga combat shotguns, holding Makarov pistols and standing over a dead boar.

Related imageNance is my go-to guy when it comes to understanding covert operations.  He has been there and done that.  While the mainstream media have raised concerns about  Butina’s fate if she is deported back to her homeland, he provides the more likely scenario.  To paraphrase Nance, “She will be welcomed back as a hero.  She did exactly what she was recruited to do.”  Yesterday on Progress Radio, Nance explained the difference between U.S. and Russian covert operations. “Americans ask their men to stand up for their country.  Russians ask their women to lay down for theirs.”

But here is the story I think everyone else is missing.  As reported, the people most shocked by Donald Trump’s “win” in the 2016 election were the candidate himself, his family and all the hangers-on (e.g. Flynn, Manafort) who used Trump to make connections from which they planned to profit after the campaign.  I am going to make a case Putin was not far behind.

Going into the 2016 election, the Russians had the following major objectives.

  1. Create general chaos in the American political system.
  2. Repeal of the Magnitsky Act which authorizes sanctions against human rights offenders and had been used by the Obama administration to freeze the assets of powerful Russian oligarchs.

Let’s start with the latter.  NO president could unilaterally make the Magnitsky Act disappear.  It was an act of Congress.  Therefore, helping any sympathetic Republic candidate for president would not be enough.  Russia also had to intervene in the congressional election.  And what did most GOP candidates have in common.  Unwavering support for the Second Amendment.  Enter Torshin and Butina plus a surge in NRA spending in support of GOP senate and house races.

In terms of creating chaos, if you think things are tumultuous now, consider what it would be like if Hillary Clinton had won.  Remember, just prior to the election, there were rumors the next Trump project was a multimedia empire with a number of partners including Steve Bannon.  In August 2016, Vanity Fair media expert Sarah Ellison reported Trump already had discussions within his inner circle about “how to monetize” the new audience he attracted during the campaign.  Imagine Fox News on steroids.  The New York Times described a potential Trump network as “raucous WWE-style political entertainment with an audience that thrills on it.”

Guess who else would have been thrilled.  Vladimir Putin.  I know, he already had RT television offered by most cable providers and via streaming.  But the total U.S. audience for RT was reported to be no more than 1.5 million viewers.  Just imagine an outlet playing to the 35 percent of Americans who live and die on Trump’s tweets and platitudes.  Putin knew Trump would not be able to access financing for the project from U.S. banks.  He would need Russian money.  Call it приманка и переключатель, Russian for bait and switch.

Donald, that tower you want to build in Moscow.  The one with my penthouse apartment.  I have better idea.  Instead, we build worldwide media empire.  You provide audience like APPRENTICE, I provide cash.  Oh, we also provide programming.

That was Plan A.  Just one problem.  Trump does not lose.

Time for Plan B.  First, begin working with the new administration to drop sanctions.  Second, continue to stroke Trump’s ego.  He will create enough chaos on his own.  No assistance needed.  But, from Russia’s perspective, this too proved to be a flawed strategy.  Once the U.S. intelligence community confirmed Russian interference in the 2016 election, it became untenable for most GOP legislators to vote for, much less sponsor, a lifting of Magnitsky Act sanctions.  Quite the opposite.  Congress passed additional sanctions and gave Trump a deadline for implementation.

Forget the second objective, creating general chaos in the U.S.  That is not the real threat to Putin’s survival.  Oligarchs may revel in divisions among the U.S. population, but their support for Putin depends solely on their continued financial well-being.  They cannot be happy the sanctions are still in place.

Putin by now must realize Plan A did not work.  Neither did Plan B.  Maria Butina would not be pleading guilty and outing the NRA, GOP activist Paul Erickson and others without Kremlin approval.  Putin must surely have another trick up his sleeve. But I have faith the U.S. intelligence community is working diligently to anticipate Plans C-Z, even if the White House is not.

Goofus and Gallant

As you may have figured out by now, many of the ideas for this blog come from the intersection of synchronistic events, one or more unrelated data points which create a narrative.  Today’s post is just one more example.

Event #1:  Yesterday, CNN released its latest poll numbers on Donald Trump’s handling of the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.  Only 29 percent of Americans now approve of the way he is responding to the special counsel’s efforts, down from 33 percent in October.  However, the decline in Trump’s rating has not translated in a rise in the public’s view of Robert Mueller.  His 48 approval rating was a one point decrease from two months ago.  Several pundits suggested Mueller’s standing may be the result of the barrage of attacks from Trump and his surrogates during a period in which Mueller is unable to defend himself.

Event #2:  Yesterday was also the 50th anniversary of the battle during the Vietnam war in which Mueller’s bravery under fire earned him a Bronze Star with distinction. His citation reads in part:

On 11 December 1968, Second Lieutenant Mueller’s platoon was the lead element in a company size combat patrol being conducted in the Mutter’s Ridge area of Quang Tri Province when the Marines came under a heavy volume of small arms, automatic weapons, and grenade launcher fire from a North Vietnamese Army company and sustained numerous casualties.  Quickly establishing a defensive perimeter, Second Lieutenant Mueller fearlessly moved from one position to another directing the accurate counterfire of his men and shouting words of encouragement to them.  With complete disregard for his own safety, he then skillfully supervised the evacuation of casualties from the hazardous area and, on one occasion, personally led a fire team across the fire-swept terrain to recover a mortally wounded Marine who had fallen in a position forward of the friendly lines.

Once again Trump has chosen to denounce an American military hero rather than accept responsibility for his own actions.  And since Mueller is not free to make his own case at the moment, I thought it was important that others stand up for him.  For those of you who remember Highlights for Children, one of my favorite features was “Goofus and Gallant.”  What better way to illustrate the difference between Trump and Mueller than a parody of this time-honored vehicle for teaching children about do’s and don’t’s.

J. Edgar Cohen

On July 11, 2005, the FBI archives released a total of 165 files consisting of over 17,000 pages that founding director J. Edgar Hoover kept in his private office rather than with other documents in the agency’s custody.  Only two people, Hoover and his secretary Helen Gandy had access to these files.  In November 2011, Washington Post reporter Kenneth Ackerman explained how Hoover used the information in these files to challenge those he saw as a threat to his tenure or his view of America.

Hoover built his FBI files into an intimidating weapon, not just for fighting crime but also for bullying government officials and critics and destroying careers. The files covered a dizzying kaleidoscope — Supreme Court justices such as Louis Brandeis and Felix Frankfurter, movie stars Mary Pickford and Marilyn Monroe, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt, physicist Albert Einstein, Zionist leader Chaim Weizmann and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller III, among others — often replete with unconfirmed gossip about private sex lives and radical ties.

I thought about Hoover’s unique ability to “blackmail” potential critics in light of three seemingly unrelated news stories over the past 24 hours.

  • A story that Jerry Falwell, Jr, evangelical leader and president of Liberty University, and his wife were part of a joint business venture with a pool attendant after meeting him during a 2012 stay at the Fountainbleau Hotel in Miami Beach.
  • The announcement that Russian national Maria Butina would plead guilty to being an unregistered foreign agent and would cooperate with federal authorities concerning her interactions with the NRA, various Republican officials and Russian officials.
  • Congressional Republicans such as Senators Orrin Hatch (UT), John Kennedy (LA), Paul Rand (KY) and Chuck Grassley (IA) and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy falling all over each other to declare Donald Trump’s directing hush money to alleged mistresses was no big deal.  Just one more example of what can only be called the GOP Cricket Brigade.

Though as yet unsubstantiated, it has been reported that the relationship between pool boy Giancarlo Granda and the Falwells may have been about more than business.   Why is this important?  According to BuzzFeed News:

Trump’s fixer Michael Cohen helped arrange Falwell Jr.’s endorsement of Trump in January 2016.  According to a separate source with knowledge of Trump’s campaign, Cohen was so confident in Falwell Jr.’s support that he and Trump assured others, even before Trump announced his candidacy, that Falwell Jr. would issue an endorsement.

Which brings us to the Butina/NRA story.  In the draft plea filing, obtained by ABC News, Butina admits she “sought to establish unofficial lines of communication with Americans having power and influence over US politics. Butina sought to use those unofficial lines of communication for the benefit of the Russia Federation.”  Presenting herself as one of the founders of a Russian version of the NRA “Right to Bear Arms,” she curried favor with the NRA as a way to gain access to influential conservatives.

As former CIA operative Malcolm Nance constantly reminds us, “Coincidences take a lot of planning.”  So it should come as no surprise:

  • The NRA endorsed Trump in May 2016, earlier than it had EVER endorsed a Republican candidate for president.
  • The NRA spent $30.3 million in support of Trump in 2016 compared to $12.5 million for Mitt Romney in 2012.
  • In 2016, the NRA contributed $6.3 million to the campaign of Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) who was chair of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.
  • Ninety-nine percent of all NRA contributions in 2016 went to Republicans.

I know, the NRA has always been a high roller when it comes to campaign spending.  However, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, NRA “overall spending surged by more than $100 million in 2016, surpassing any previous annual NRA spending totals on record.”

Bill Maher has a segment on his HBO program Real Time called, “I don’t know it for a fact, but I just know it’s true.”  I don’t know for a fact the extra $100 million in 2016 was Russian money laundered through the NRA to support Trump and GOP congressional candidates, but I just know it’s more than possible.  And a la J. Edgar Hoover, if Trump and Cohen were aware of it, that is a pretty powerful incentive for GOP senators and representatives to tow the Trump line.

If this is correct, tomorrow, when Butina pleads guilty in federal court, could be a bad day for the Republican party and several GOP members of Congress based on what is already documented.  For example, after hosting several NRA officials in Moscow in 2016, Butina sent the following message to her Russian handler. “We should let them express their gratitude now, we will put pressure on them later.” (Source: ABC News)

Image result for butina and eriksonAdditionally, Butina had an on-going personal relationship with Paul Erickson, a South Dakota Republican operative who had been active in both the Romney and Trump campaigns.  In October 2016, Erickson emailed, “I’ve been involved in securing a VERY private line of communication between the Kremlin and key [unnamed political party] leaders through, of all conduits, the [unnamed gun-rights organization].”  And an FBI raid of Erikson’s home produced a hand-written note. “How to respond to FSB offer of employment?”  FYI, the FSB is the Russian CIA.

All this before we have any knowledge of what the FBI retrieved when it raided Cohen’s offices, home and temporary residence.  As I have noted on numerous occasions, if this were the story line in a spy novel, it would be panned for lacking an ounce of plausibility.  But in TrumpWorld, it’s called Tuesday.

Kimba-Yeah

From the Associated Press, dateline December 6, 2018.

NEW YORK — Two women hired to clean at one of President Donald Trump’s golf resorts in New Jersey say they were in the country illegally when they got their jobs, supervisors knew it and that many employees there also lack legal documents, according to a report in The New York Times.

At least they were not separated from their children.  And, of course, Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, Steve Miller, Laura Ingraham and the rest of the Trump carolers are again singing a tribute version of their favorite Simon and Garfunkel hit, “The Sounds of Crickets.”

Now, there are a lot of companies and institutions which hire undocumented workers.  So, we should not be surprised the Trump Organization did likewise.  But I seem to remember a time when a cabinet official, much less the chief executive, was held to a higher standard.

In 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Kimba Wood to be his attorney general after his first nominee Zoe Baird admitted she had employed an undocumented immigrant as a nanny and had not made social security or medicare tax payments.  In what became know as Nannygate, it was soon discovered Wood also employed an illegal immigrant BUT had paid the required taxes.  And this is important.  At the time, prior to passage of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, which made hiring illegals a crime, Wood was not breaking the law.  Her only “crime” was not informing White House officials of this potentially embarrassing disclosure.

However, as we so often learn, karma is a bitch.  From an article posted on TIME.COM dated April 17, 2018.

The mounting legal case against President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Michael Cohen has brought another name into the news: Kimba Wood.

As the federal judge in charge of a highly watched case, Wood already made a splash when she ordered Cohen’s attorney on Monday to reveal that he had Fox News host Sean Hannity as a client.

As expected, the White House and Trump supporters could not let this go.  Sebastian Gorka, Trump’s former deputy assistant for policy, tweeted, “She is a Clinton confidante who was chosen by Hillary to be AG.  The #DEEPstate is real.”  Actor James Wood (obviously no relation) chimed in, “#KimbaWood is pure Clinton crony deep state.  Of course she’s the judge in Mueller’s attack on Cohen.”  Others were quick to point out she had officiated at George Soros’ wedding in 2013.

As with every outlandish Trumpian conspiracy theory, there is one YUGE problem.  Wood was appointed as a U.S. district judge by President Ronald Reagan based on a recommendation by then Senator Alfonse D’Amato (R-NY).  She was unanimously confirmed by the Senate.
